The announcement was posted by Rick Osterloh who commented that the move is
an opportunity to invest even more in Wear OS as well as introduce Made by Google wearable devices into the market.
Google is currently behind in the smartwatch market and is aiming to boost Wear OS, previously this year Google purchased an unknown tech from Fossil Group for $40 million in aid of their cause.
Osterloh commented,
“Fitbit has been a true pioneer in the industry and has created engaging products, experiences and a vibrant community of users.” Adding, “By working closely with Fitbit’s team of experts, and bringing together the best AI, software and hardware, we can help spur innovation in wearables and build products to benefit even more people around the world.”
With the new deal, Fitbit will be joining Google however the company issued a separate statement mentioning that “Fitbit health and wellness data will not be used for Google ads.”
As google wishes to impact the smartwatch market the company has the potential to integrate Fitbit with existing google fit apps to provide an android alternative to Apple Watches’ successful fitness tracking.
