The term High Net Worth Individual (HNWI) and Ultra High Net Worth Individual (UHWNI) is used a lot today to describe the wealthy. However, what exactly qualifies someone as a HNWI or UHNWI and what is the difference between the two.

What is a HNWI?

Technically there is no set figure to establish a High Net Worth individual, however, terms do indicate that it measures liquid assets, dismissing wealth invested in property or business. The liquid assets should range between 6 to 7 figures with the most commonly quoted benchmark being $1 million in liquid financial assets. Someone with less than this amount in liquid finances around $100,000 is considered to be “affluent”.

What is a UHNWI?

Similar conditions apply to Ultra High Net Worth Individuals with only liquid finances being taken into consideration. However, the benchmark of wealth is considerably higher with those who are classed as UHNWI required to have more than $30 million in liquid wealth.
