Twelve new renewable energy projects have won contracts from the UK government scheme Difference. The projects will be able to provide clean energy to seven million homes at record low low prices.
The projects are predicted to provide 6GW of capacity with the energy below market price without any additional add ons or subsidy on bills. As technology advances, the cost of offshore wind is now lower with a reduction of roughly 30%.
The projects are steps in the right direction to decarbonise the energy system as the UK works towards net zero emissions by 2050. The project also has the positive effect of creating new jobs with a prediction of 8,000 jobs created in the UK.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson commented:
The UK is leading the way in the fight against climate change, and it’s great news that millions more homes will be powered by clean energy at record low prices.
Adding:
Seizing the opportunities of clean energy not only helps to protect our planet but will also back businesses and boost jobs across the UK.
Energy and Clean Growth Minister Kwasi Kwarteng also commented, saying:
Offshore wind is a British success story, with new projects at record low prices creating new opportunities for jobs and economic growth as we leave the EU. The support we’re announcing today will mean that over 7 million more homes will be powered by renewable energy as we decarbonise our energy system – crucial as we continue on the road to net zero emissions by 2050.
Currently, the UK has the largest installed capacity in the world for offshore wind. The UK has already made a notable start in decarbonising its energy system, with renewables generating a record 33% of the country’s electricity last year.
The UK moves forward in green energy as his year in the UK it was reported that renewable energy overtook the use of fossil fuels for the first time ever and UK universities have signed an unprecedented deal with wind farms.
