The creators of the popular video app have announced the company vision of branching out into the phone market.

What is TikTok?

TikTok was released in 2017 and is designed for people to post 15-second videos. The app has been very successful with over a billion downloads. Byte Dance also owns a variety of other platforms including AI-based video and news apps, such as Slack alternative Lark, video-chat app Flipchat, and news aggregator Toutiao.

Chinese financial magazine Caijing reports the phone has been in development for a number of months but little details have been given.

According to Reuters BytesDance plans to work with a software giant in China to produce the phone.

Breaking into the Smartphone Market

Although ByteDance has a number of successful apps the smartphone market is a whole other entity.

Ben Wood, technology analyst at CSS comments “It’s extremely difficult for any new entrants to break into the smartphone market profitably, particularly at a time when big brands such as Apple, Samsung, and Huawei are carpet-bombing consumers with millions of pounds worth of marketing”

Although a difficult market ByteDance future in smartphones will become more clear when further details on the phone are given.
